Introducing the Kinsight
FAST AND EASY EX VIVO 3D ORGAN IMAGING
Kaer Labs innovate and introduce the Kinsight: an easy and efficient fluorescence imaging technique for thick tissue visualization.

Different techniques allow 3D imaging of organs, such as micro-CT, or light sheet microscopy, but none is as simple as the Kinsight: the technique does not require any labeling or contrast agent, and the acquisition of a paraffin embedded or frozen organ is usually obtained in less than 2 hours. The Kinsight can also be used to reveal specific fluorescence signals.

The system, developed in collaboration with the microscopy and histology platform MicroPICell from Nantes University / SFR François Bonamy, is based on the principle of serial block face imaging: the imaging system Kinsight acquires an image of the surface of the organ in the block of tissue each time a slice is cut by a microtome (FFPE blocks) or a cryostat (frozen tissue), in a fully automated process. The generated stack of images is then used to reconstruct a 3D view of the organ.
The contrast of the images comes from the difference in autofluorescence of different structures of the organ and highlights anatomical tissue organization. The system can also detect specific fluorescence which may be present in the tissue (transgenic animals, fluorescent antibodies, contrast agents etc…). Multi wavelength excitation allows to reveal 3D distribution and localization of fluorescent reporters.

Kinsight has been used to study a variety of organs and models ranging from mouse to sheep, zebrafish and plant models. The system addresses questions in various fields of research such as developmental biology, cancer biology, vascular biology, nuclear medicine and more.
